I purchased OIO on 9/26 and added it to my blog - no problems. Even configured a zone to put on my Blogger blog. Worked great.
On 9/30, I downloaded the upgrade and my blog disappeared when I installed it. Have had a heck of a time getting it back up.
I am way too nervous about even installing it now on the blog. I read that it can also be used as a stand alone. I would gladly use some space in my web account and run it from there rather than the blog. Is that possible?

Yes, you can do that. If you upload the files to the directory you want to run it on, then point your browser at that directory, then it will guide you through the (short) installation process.
I would say though that you should be able to use it as a Wordpress plugin without problems - I'm not sure what went wrong when you made the initial upgrade, but so far (thankfully) it has been as isolated case.
But as you say, a standalone install would be safest if you're uneasy about re-attempting it with Wordpress.
